Looking to update your old 5" recess can or just looking for a better quality light. Not sure what will work with your fixture? Here are a few things to check before you make your selection:
1. Unscrew or remove your current light source from the can and make a note as to the model number or bulb type. This isn't an exact science as to finding a replacement as people will put whatever bulb they can find in just to get light.
2. Check to see how the trim is installed. Is it just a small trim with clips or tension springs (Fig. 1-1) connected to the recess can or is the trim the actual recess can part (Fig 1-2). Also check to make sure the trim being used isn't a reducer or some sort, this will change the type of bulb you can use if you go that route (Fig. 1-3).

3. Check the depth of the recess can, if there isn't a recess can because the trim was the can and now you just have a socket with an electrical cord going back to a box, then make note of that too.
